The Canon 50mm f/1.4 is on sale right now for $299 for Prime members. That brings it down to a price that makes it very worthwhile in choosing this lens over the 50mm f/1.8, which sells for $120. 50mm is a great lens to have. On a full-frame camera you get the lens that most film-era cameras had on them giving you nearest to what the human eye sees. On a crop-sensor camera, this lens becomes an 80mm, which is great length for fashion and portrait work.
I always recommend going to a local camera shop and holding whatever gear you want to buy in your hand. That’s what I did when I bought my lens, and even though the 50mm f/1.8 is a bargain, it’s made of mostly plastic. Plus it has a very small focus ring, and you will find times when you need to manually focus. Plus if you’re shooting video and will use a follow focus, the focus ring of the f/1.8 is too small to attach a focus ring attachment.
FYI, Nikon has a similar f/1.8 and f/1.4
When I purchased the f/1.8 it was about $450, so I feel this current price is a steal. It’s what they’re going for used!
