I picked up a used Canon 70-300mm f/4-5.6 this week to fill in my lenses at this range. I really would like a Canon 70-200 f/2.8, but they sell used for $1,000 for the Mark 1 version and $1800 for the Mark 2. So this will do at $270 used $560 new until I can save for that.
I do like this lens. I think it’s quality falls between the 75-300 f/4-5.6 mm and 70-200 f/4 being that this is a USM (Ultrasonic Motor) lens. I had thought that all USM lenses could be manually focused in Autofocus mode, but it can’t. I’m also disappointed that the inner barrel rotates making the hood difficult to attach.
Some of the shots I’ve taken with it so far. I set the 5Dmk3 on P mode to see what the camera would set for exposure. The outdoor shots were through my living room window as I haven’t been outside much (it’s -50 wind chill in Chicago). They’re dark indoors. Needing the ISO pumped considerably.
