I was linking the Tascam DR-40 Field Recorder in my last post describing the new Tascam DR-60D and I noticed the price had dropped to $139. It says cut from $279, but we all know how retail works. It was really cut down from $199, which is what I paid.
Sure, the majority of DSLR film makers use the Zoom H4n, but I’ve been very happy with the Tascam. The Zoom is a bit more for musicians. You can 4 track record on it, so you could mix your own songs. The Zoom has a 3.5″ mic input, and on the Tascam you have to pick up a Rode 3.5″ to XLR adapter. Also the Zoom can become a USB mic. The Zoom does have its problems. I’m told the SD door gets opened VERY easily causing the unit to stop recording. Plus there are reports of the Zoom losing record sync over a long period.
And the Zoom is still listed at $269. So if you want a great field recorder at the great price of $139, check out the Tascam DR-40.
