I am more than a bit excited my wife has green lighted the ordering of two iPhone 5s for Friday. Partially because I’ve been stuck using my 3GS all summer because my infant daughter’s mouth killed the charge port on my 4s. But mainly because I’m excited for the iPhone 5s’ upgraded camera. Lug around a 5Dmk3 with battery grip a few hours and you can really wear your arms down. Sometimes it’s nice just to use your cell phone to take some shots – as many people do these days.
Here’s the specs on the iPhone 5s’ iSight camera:
- 8 megapixels with 1.5µ pixels
- ƒ/2.2 aperture
- Sapphire crystal lens cover
- True Tone flash
- Backside illumination sensor
- Five-element lens
- Hybrid IR filter
- Tap to focus
- Face detection
- Auto image stabilization
- Burst mode
- Photo geotagging
Of course, very few people aside from those working at Apple have had a chance to take some pictures with it, so we’ll have to wait till Friday to see how all those specs affect the photographs it takes. But so far the buzz is that it’s a great camera. The 8MP iSIght camera on the rear of the 5s has the same amount of megapixels as the 5, but the size of each of its pixels is larger, which means better low-light photos. That plus a larger maximum aperture of f/2.2, means the camera sensor can get access to more light via the lens opening.
The 5s now has dual flash with both white and amber tones, which supposedly will make for less washed-out images in low light. Also the 5s has image stabilization, achieved by taking 4 rapid exposures, and combining elements from each. And that’s not all folks. It also has a burst mode that shoots 10 frames per second, then the phone pics the shot it thinks is best based on things like “was the subject’s eyes closed?”
Pretty cool stuff. Thanks Roswell crash! 🙂
The new leather case apparently can wear. And since the 5s has the same body as the 5, I think I’ll stay with the gold ol’ rubber bumper. I prefer a minimal case. And besides, wouldn’t rubber shock absorb better than leather?!
Enjoy your new phones. Don’t wait in line too long Friday!
